Terms of use

Last updated 21 September 2026.

These terms govern your use of ihatejob. By using the site you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.

1. Using the tools

The tools are free to use for their intended purpose: building, checking and converting your own CV, or one you are authorised to work on. Everything runs inside your browser. Your CV is not uploaded to us, and we do not receive, store or transmit it.

You may not use the site to process material you have no right to process, to produce a CV that misrepresents someone’s qualifications or employment history, or in any way that breaks the law where you are. The middle one matters most to us: a tool that helps you describe real work is worth building, and one that helps you invent it is not.

2. What the rating is, and what it is not

The score out of 100, the six grades, the findings that quote your own lines back at you, and the comparison against a job advert are opinions produced by rules written into this site. They are a second reading of your own document. They are not a professional assessment, not careers advice, and not a prediction.

Nothing here is a promise of an interview, a job, or that any employer or applicant tracking system will read your CV in a particular way. A perfect score guarantees nothing, and a poor one is not a verdict on you.

3. Ownership of the software

The software behind ihatejob — its source code, its minified output, its parsing and rating engines, its profession and region packs, its page content, copy and design — is the proprietary work of ihatejob and is protected by copyright. All rights are reserved. No licence to reuse it is granted to anyone.

In particular, you may not copy, reproduce, modify, adapt, translate, publish, distribute, sublicense, sell, rent, host, mirror, or create derivative works from any part of it. You may not remove or obscure any copyright notice it carries. That applies however you obtained it — from this website, from a page’s source, from your browser’s developer tools, from network responses, from a cache, from an archive, or from anywhere else.

Except where the law expressly grants a right that cannot be waived, you may not reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble, deobfuscate or otherwise attempt to derive the underlying methods of any part of it. You may not extract it by automated means, and you may not use it — in whole or in part, in source or compiled form — as training data or input for any machine learning or generative system.

Code is delivered to your browser because that is the only way a browser-based application can run. Delivering it is a technical necessity, not permission to reuse it, and no such permission should be inferred from the fact that the code can be read.

4. The engines

Some parts of this site are original engineering rather than configuration of existing libraries, and are named here so there is no doubt about what section 3 covers.

The import engine is our own work: its PDF text extraction, including decoding subset TrueType fonts through their embedded character maps; its reading of Word and LinkedIn archives; and the deterministic parser that recovers sections, dates, roles and bullets from prose written to no fixed convention.

So is the rating engine — its six graded bands, the rules behind each finding, and the matching that quotes a specific line back at you — along with the comparison against a job advert, the conversion between formats, and the profession and region packs that decide what a CV in a given field is expected to contain.

These are named for clarity, not as a complete list. Nothing here narrows section 3, which applies to the whole of our work whether or not a given part is described above.

4a. Enforcement

We reserve every remedy available to us for unauthorised copying or use, including seeking removal of infringing material from the host, the registrar or the platform carrying it, issuing takedown notices, seeking injunctive relief, and pursuing a civil claim for copyright infringement together with any associated damages and costs.

Because copying software is easy to do and hard to undo, damages alone may not be an adequate remedy, and we may seek an injunction without that being treated as a waiver of any other right.

4b. The name and the look

The name “ihatejob”, the logo and the visual identity of this site are reserved separately from the copyright above. Do not present anything as this site, use the name in a way that suggests we made or endorsed it, or register a confusingly similar domain.

5. Your CV and your privacy

Building, rating, importing, converting and comparing all happen on your device. There is no endpoint on this site that receives a CV, which means we cannot see yours, cannot store it, and cannot recover it for you.

Anything the builder keeps between visits lives in your own browser’s storage and can be cleared from your browser at any time. The privacy page lists every key by name.

6. What happens to something you do send us

If you leave a review or share a journey and tick the box saying it may be published, you give us permission to publish it on this site with the credit you typed, and to edit it for length and clarity without changing what you said. Leave the box unticked and it is read, not published. You can ask us to take down anything of yours at any time.

Do not send anything you do not have the right to send, and do not put another person’s personal details into a form here.

7. Availability

This is a free service offered as it is, with no promise that it will be available, correct, or permanent. The builder keeps working with no signal once it has loaded, which is the only availability guarantee really in our gift.

8. No warranty

The tools are provided “as is”, without warranty of any kind. Importing a CV can be lossy, and results vary with what you put in. Keep your originals, and read anything you intend to send to an employer before you send it — particularly where a mistake would cost you something.

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of the site, including loss of data. Your CV lives in your own browser storage: keep your own copy of anything you would be sorry to lose, because clearing your browser data deletes it and we hold no backup of it. Nothing here limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited.

9. Third-party components

ihatejob has no runtime or build dependencies: no framework, no library, no analytics, no third-party script on any page. Everything the site serves was written for it, with one exception.

The typeface is Public Sans, which is not ours. It is licensed under the SIL Open Font License and is served from this domain rather than a font service so that no third party sees your requests. Its licence is published with it, and nothing in sections 3 to 4b limits any right that licence gives you in respect of the typeface.

10. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of India. If you use the site from elsewhere, you may also have rights under your own local law that these terms cannot remove.

11. Changes

These terms may change. The date at the top shows when they were last revised, and every revision is visible in the public commit history of this site. Continued use after a change means you accept the revised terms.

12. Contact

No account needed, and nothing to sign up for:

  • Something is broken, or a CV it could not read — the report form on the home page. It reaches us directly and privately.
  • Anything else you want to tell us — the review form, which takes any message, not only praise.
  • Licensing enquiries, permission requests, or to report unauthorised use of this software — the same report form. Put “licensing” at the top of it and it will be read as one.
